I was ‘up there’. No denying it. And I assure you that after waking up one day and realizing it, I tried my hardest to ditch the ‘morbidly obese’ classification. Let’s see: I was depressed, already had a history of weight struggles, and I like to eat.
Why the Ketogenic Diet
Well, the issue with most weight loss attempts are they are unrealistic, not practical, just don’t work, or are unhealthy. I’ve had experience with the ketogenic, Atkins, Low Carb diet before. It is truly a fat burning, sustainable-ish eating regimen. Here is more:
- Knowing that it works, and actually burns body fat is reason numero uno.
- It is also measurable, so you can test whether you are doing it right
- Although carbs are restricted, so much good food is allowed
- This is not a Calorie counting, starving yourself diet
- Cutting out so much unhealthy carbs, my BP, cholesterol, mood, energy, ……..all improved

What happens on a Ketogenic Diet is that instead of our body relying on glucose and fatty acids (from dietary and body fat) for its main source of energy, the lack of dietary carbs causes our body to convert fatty acids to molecules called ketones. Those ketones, being as easily accessible and energy rich as glucose, become the body’s main source of energy. This process is called Ketosis.
Advantages of Ketosis
The reason why this diet seemingly defies the Law of Consevation of Mass and Energy (in order to lose weight yoy must burn more calories than you consume) is because when fatty acids from dietary and body fat are converted to ketones:
1.) While in ketosis the body is always breaking down fat into ketones,regardless of whether your energy needs require it
2.) Ketones, unlike glucose and fatty acids, cannot be restored as fat if unused. Excess ketones are urinated/perspired out. it’s every persons dream, right? To literally ‘pee’ your body fat into a comode. This is also why exercise isn’t necessary, especially when you have an abundance of body fat. #Justbeinghonest.
3.) Our bodies relying on fat for its main source of energy as opposed to glucose is the premise behind other diets (such as Paleo) and health benefits. Read the Wikipedia article on Ketosis
4.) The first couple of weeks are tough, but when your body adjusts, YES! Fat flows and energy is in abundance. it is clearly worth it.
5.) At the point where you are able to start training, the results just occur faster.
You Can Measure Whether You are in Ketosis or Not
I was ‘peeing on these things about 5 times a day. So allow me to save you the trouble and mental anguish. A positive result is indicated by a change in color on the actual strip. The scale indicated the amount of ketones in your urine. If the result is positive, your body is in a constant process of breaking down fat. That’s a good thing 🙂 . If you have gne off of the diet, or are worried about something you just ate, these strips will help put your mind at ease. While a moderate amount of ketones (per color key) is a good indicator of how well your body is performing at breaking apart body fat, other circumstances are at play. A positive result once or twice a day is sufficient.
